Listen to Your Car

Learn to Listen to Your Car

Okay, we admit it, you're car will not speak actual words to you but what you can learn from listening may be just as amazing.

Find a time to when it is quiet with no distractions and just listen to your car for a few moments. Listen to the engine both with the hood open and with it closed so you have a reference point for later. If and when your car develops an unusual sound you will be able to recognize it as a warning sign.

While not every sound that seems out of place is going to be a real problem this is one of your best ways to recognize something may be wrong. Below are a few common warnings you car could be trying to tell you if you are listening:

  • Squealing when you press on the brakes - typically means that you are in need of having your brake pads replaced. You do not want to delay too long in getting this checked out as your brakes are obviously very important to you safety.
  • A thumping kind of sound when you trun the corner - could mean that you need to get a "u-joint" replaced. Again, not something to delay on getting checked out.
  • A high pitched squeal that happens when you first put pressure on the throttle of the car but then goes away - typically means that one or more of your belts are out of adjustment or may need to be replaced.
  • Scraping when your windshield wipers are being used - likely you need to replace a wiper. This should be easy to see as well since the wiper will probably not do a good job of removing the water on your windshield.

By getting yourself a regular mechanic and having the car checked out at least yearly it will be easier to determine if an unusual noise is something to be concerned. Your mechanic will become familiar with the car and when the last maintenance steps were taken making it easier to advise you.
